caps

Hats or limits

Caps are hats, particularly ones with a visor or brim at the front: baseball caps, trucker caps.

The word also refers to any covering that fits over the top of something—a bottle cap, a lens cap, a cap on a tooth.

To cap something is to put a limit on it: The city capped property tax increases.

To cap off an event is to conclude it fittingly: We capped off the evening with champagne.

In online communication, caps means capital letters, with typing in all caps understood as shouting: Why are you yelling at me in caps? (All-caps CAPS may refer to the television network.)
