lower case

Small letter form

Lower case refers to the smaller form of letters in alphabets that distinguish between two sizes: a, b, c rather than A, B, C.

The term comes from the physical cases that held movable type—lowercase letters were stored in the lower case, capitals in the upper.

As a verb, to lowercase something is to convert it: The style guide says to lowercase job titles.

Also spelled lowercase or lower-case.
