fedora

Soft brimmed headwear

A fedora is a soft felt hat with a lengthwise crease in the crown and a flexible brim.

The style dominated men's fashion from the 1920s through the 1950s, associated with detectives, gangsters, and businessmen.

Today fedoras appear in vintage fashion and, through internet culture, have become associated with a certain type of socially awkward man who affects old-fashioned gentility: He tipped his fedora and said "m'lady." The trilby, a similar hat with a shorter brim, is often mistakenly called a fedora.
