Flatline refers to the straight horizontal line on a monitor that indicates the absence of electrical activity, particularly in a heart monitor showing cardiac arrest.
As a verb, to flatline means to die or to show no vital signs: The patient flatlined twice during surgery but was resuscitated.
The term extends figuratively to anything that shows no activity, growth, or variation: Sales have flatlined since the new competitor entered the market.
Something that flatlines goes completely still or ceases to function.
