cordon sanitaire

Protective buffer zone

A cordon sanitaire is a barrier—originally a line of guards—preventing people or goods from leaving an infected area and spreading disease.

The term extends to any protective buffer zone: political parties may form a cordon sanitaire around an extremist faction, refusing to cooperate with it.

Western nations maintained a cordon sanitaire around the Soviet Union.
