block-and-tackle

Rope-and-wheels lifter

A block-and-tackle is a system of pulleys and ropes used to lift or move heavy loads.

The pulleys (blocks) are threaded with rope or cable (tackle) in a way that multiplies force—the more pulleys, the easier the lift.

Essential equipment for sailing, construction, and rigging: We used a block-and-tackle to hoist the engine out of the truck.
