blackgum

Eastern deciduous hardwood

Blackgum is a North American deciduous tree with glossy leaves that turn brilliant scarlet in autumn.

Also called black tupelo or sour gum, it grows in swamps and moist lowlands, producing small blue-black fruits eaten by birds.

The wood, tough and difficult to split, has been used for mallets and chopping blocks.
