black eyed peas
New Year's luck
Black-eyed peas are legumes with a distinctive black spot on their pale surface, resembling an eye.
A staple of Southern American cuisine, they're traditionally eaten on New Year's Day for good luck: We always have black-eyed peas and collard greens on January first.
Also called cowpeas or black-eyed beans. (Capitalized Black Eyed Peas is the hip-hop group.)
