blacking
Stove surface coating
Blacking is a black paste or polish used to darken and shine shoes, boots, stoves, or metal surfaces.
The term is old-fashioned; modern products are usually called shoe polish or stove polish.
As a verbal noun, blacking refers to the act of applying such polish: He spent Sunday morning blacking his boots.
