sugya
Rabbinic textual section
A sugya is a unit of discussion in the Talmud—a self-contained passage examining a particular legal or theological question through debate, interpretation, and commentary.
Scholars analyze the Talmud sugya by sugya, each one weaving together biblical verses, rabbinic opinions, and dialectical argument: We spent the whole class on a single sugya about Sabbath boundaries.
