battle-cruiser

Speedy armored warship

A battle-cruiser is a large warship combining the heavy armament of a battleship with the speed of a cruiser, achieved by sacrificing some armor protection.

Developed in the early twentieth century, battle-cruisers were designed to outgun anything they couldn't outrun: The battle-cruiser could chase down enemy cruisers while carrying battleship-caliber guns.

The type proved vulnerable in fleet actions and was largely abandoned after World War I.
