barkcloth

Beaten tree fabric

Barkcloth is fabric made from the inner bark of certain trees, particularly fig and mulberry species.

The bark is stripped, soaked, and beaten until it forms a flexible, paper-like textile.

Traditional to Pacific Island cultures, especially Polynesia, where it's called tapa, barkcloth serves for clothing, ceremonial objects, and decoration.

Modern barkcloth may also refer to textured cotton fabric with a similar crinkled appearance.
