bastard

Child without marriage

Bastard originally meant a child born to unmarried parents—once a serious legal and social stigma.

That meaning persists but has faded.

More commonly, bastard is an insult for an unpleasant or contemptible man: He's a real bastard.

It can also express grudging admiration: You lucky bastard.

And it describes something difficult or unpleasant: That test was a bastard.

The word is milder than many vulgar insults—roughly equivalent to jerk in force.
