basophile

Histamine-releasing leukocyte

A basophile is a cell or tissue component that stains readily with basic dyes—the opposite of acidophile.

In blood, basophils are white blood cells with granules that take up basic stains, involved in allergic reactions and inflammation.

The term appears in histology and hematology: The slide showed increased basophiles in the tissue sample.

Also spelled basophil.
