epinephrine

Fight-or-flight chemical

Epinephrine is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress, triggering the body's fight-or-flight response—accelerating heart rate, dilating airways, and sharpening alertness.

In medicine, synthetic epinephrine treats severe allergic reactions, cardiac arrest, and asthma attacks: She carries an epinephrine injector for bee stings.

Also called adrenaline, especially in British English and informal American usage.
