dying

On death's threshold

Dying is the process of ceasing to live, the transition toward death.

Someone dying of cancer is in their final decline.

The word extends to things fading or ending: a dying art, dying embers, her dying wish.

To be dying to do something is to want it intensely: I'm dying to know what happened.

To be dying for something is to crave it: I'm dying for a cup of coffee.
