aurora australis

Antarctic sky glow

Aurora australis is the southern hemisphere's counterpart to the northern lights—a natural display of colored light in the night sky near the South Pole, caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth's atmosphere.

Also called the southern lights.

We sailed far enough south to glimpse the aurora australis.
