Kp index
Aurora forecast metric
The Kp index is a measure of geomagnetic disturbance caused by solar activity, scaled from 0 to 9.
Values of 5 or higher indicate a geomagnetic storm.
Aurora chasers watch the Kp index to predict northern lights visibility—higher values mean auroras visible at lower latitudes: The Kp index hit 7 last night, so we drove north to see the aurora.
