armatures

Sculptor's wire skeletons

Armatures are the rotating coils in electric motors and generators—the part that spins within the magnetic field to convert electrical energy to mechanical or vice versa.

In sculpture, an armature is the internal framework that supports clay or plaster during construction: She built a wire armature before adding the clay.

The word extends to any underlying structure that gives shape to something built around it.
