after

Later in time

After is frequent in expressions about both time and space.

With reference to time, after is similar to past and later than.

With reference to space, after is similar to behind.

In figurative use, after relates to the idea of a goal, somewhat like at or toward: he came after me with a gun.

After is also used to point out similarities between things that came before and things that came after: the boy is named after his grandfather; a painting styled after van Gogh.

Though mainly a preposition, after can also be used as a conjunction to introduce a clause describing action before the main clause: She left after we had breakfast.
