ampullae

Roman oil containers

Ampullae is the plural of ampulla, a flask-shaped vessel or anatomical structure.

In ancient Rome, an ampulla was a small container for oils or perfumes.

In anatomy, ampullae are bulbous enlargements in tubular structures: the ampullae of the semicircular canals in the inner ear help detect motion and balance.

The ampullae were clearly visible under magnification.
