cristae
Inner membrane folds
Cristae are the folds of the inner membrane of a mitochondrion, where cellular respiration occurs.
These inward-projecting ridges dramatically increase surface area for the chemical reactions that produce energy.
The singular is crista: The crista was visible under electron microscopy.
The term comes from Latin for crest or ridge.
