Roman amphitheater
Ancient oval stadium
A Roman amphitheater is an oval or circular open-air arena built by the ancient Romans for public spectacles—gladiatorial combat, animal hunts, executions, and mock naval battles.
The structure featured tiered seating surrounding a central performance area.
The Colosseum in Rome is the most famous example.
Modern sports stadiums descend from this design.
