Roman amphitheatre

Ancient oval stadium

A Roman amphitheatre is an oval or circular open-air venue built by ancient Romans for public spectacles—gladiatorial combat, animal hunts, and executions.

The design featured tiered seating surrounding a central arena, allowing thousands of spectators clear sightlines.

The Colosseum in Rome is the most famous example.

The term now describes any similar ancient structure: We toured the Roman amphitheatre at Pompeii.
