kohen

Aaronic lineage member

A kohen is a member of the Jewish priestly class, descended patrilineally from Aaron, the brother of Moses.

Kohanim (the Hebrew plural) traditionally performed sacrificial rites in the Temple and retain ceremonial roles in modern Judaism—they recite certain blessings, are called first to read from the Torah, and observe special marriage restrictions.

The surname Cohen and its variants (Cohn, Kahn, Kagan) typically indicate priestly descent.

His family were kohanim, so he couldn't marry a convert.
