aliya
Return to Israel
Aliya is the immigration of Jews to Israel, literally meaning "ascent" in Hebrew.
The word reflects the idea of spiritual elevation in moving to the Jewish homeland.
Someone who makes aliya is an oleh (male) or olah (female).
After the war, thousands made aliya.
Also spelled aliyah.
In synagogue contexts, an aliyah is being called up to read from the Torah.
