airboat

Propeller-driven marsh vessel

An airboat is a flat-bottomed boat propelled by an aircraft-type propeller and powered by an engine mounted above the waterline.

The design allows navigation through shallow waters, swamps, and marshes where conventional propellers would snag on vegetation or bottom out.

Airboats are common in the Florida Everglades for transportation, tours, and wildlife management: We took an airboat through the swamp to see alligators.
