dopamine agonist

Parkinson's disease treatment

A dopamine agonist is a drug that mimics dopamine by binding to dopamine receptors in the brain.

These medications treat conditions where dopamine signaling is impaired, particularly Parkinson's disease and restless leg syndrome.

Unlike levodopa, which the body converts to dopamine, agonists activate the receptors directly: Her doctor switched her to a dopamine agonist when the levodopa wore off too quickly.
