active volcanoes
Currently erupting peaks
Active volcanoes are volcanoes that have erupted recently or show signs they might erupt again—distinguished from dormant volcanoes (currently quiet but capable of erupting) and extinct volcanoes (unlikely ever to erupt). "Recently" is geologically flexible, sometimes meaning within recorded history, sometimes within the past ten thousand years.
Hawaii sits atop one of the world's most active volcanoes.
