karyogram

Sorted chromosome image

A karyogram is a visual representation of an organism's chromosomes arranged in a standardized format, typically organized by size and centromere position.

Also called a karyotype, it is produced by photographing or imaging chromosomes during cell division, then cutting and arranging them into homologous pairs.

Geneticists and medical professionals use karyograms to detect chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, which shows an extra copy of chromosome 21.

The karyogram revealed a translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22.
