Western Sahara
Contested North African
Western Sahara is a disputed territory on the northwest coast of Africa, bordered by Morocco, Algeria, and Mauritania.
Morocco claims and administers most of the region, while the Sahrawi independence movement seeks self-determination.
The territory's status remains one of Africa's longest-running territorial disputes: The UN has brokered multiple failed ceasefires in Western Sahara.
