Viceroy

Deputy to monarchs

A viceroy is a ruler who governs a territory as the representative of a monarch.

The title was common in colonial administration, where viceroys wielded near-sovereign power over distant lands: the Viceroy of India, the Spanish viceroys of Peru.

The word combines "vice" (in place of) with "roy" (king).

A viceroy butterfly mimics the monarch butterfly's coloring—a visual pun on the hierarchical relationship.
