V-2

Wartime ballistic weapon

The V-2 was a German ballistic missile developed during World War II—the first long-range guided rocket weapon.

Thousands were launched against Allied cities, primarily London and Antwerp, in 1944–45.

The V stood for Vergeltungswaffe (vengeance weapon).

After the war, captured V-2 technology and scientists became the foundation of American and Soviet space programs.
