Tonto

Tonto is the Native American companion of the Lone Ranger in the long-running American Western franchise spanning radio, television, and film.

The character speaks in stilted English and addresses the Ranger as "Kemosabe." In Spanish, *tonto* means stupid or foolish, which has made the name controversial.

The character has become a reference point for discussions of stereotypical Native American portrayals in popular media.
