William Tell Overture
Famous operatic prelude
The William Tell Overture is an orchestral piece by Gioachino Rossini, composed in 1829 as the introduction to his opera about the Swiss folk hero.
Its finale—a galloping trumpet melody—became iconic as the theme for the Lone Ranger radio and television series, making it one of the most recognized pieces of classical music in American popular culture: The William Tell Overture started playing and everyone thought of cowboys.
