Tojo

Japan's wartime premier

Tojo refers to Hideki Tojo, the Japanese military general and politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan during most of World War II (1941-1944).

He was a principal architect of Japan's military expansion and the decision to attack Pearl Harbor.

After Japan's surrender, Tojo was tried for war crimes by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East and executed in 1948.

His name sometimes appears in historical discussions as shorthand for Japanese militarism during the war.
