Johnny Appleseed

Legendary fruit planter

Johnny Appleseed was the nickname of John Chapman (1774–1845), an American folk hero who planted apple nurseries across the Midwest.

He became a symbol of gentle eccentricity, environmental stewardship, and westward expansion.

The name now describes anyone who spreads something widely: She's the Johnny Appleseed of community gardens.
