communist bloc
Eastern alliance, historically
The communist bloc refers to the group of countries aligned with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, bound by shared socialist ideology and political alliance.
Also called the Eastern bloc or Soviet bloc, it included the USSR, its Eastern European satellites, and sometimes China, Cuba, and other socialist states.
The term implies ideological uniformity and opposition to Western capitalism: Trade between the communist bloc and the West was severely restricted.
