Przewalski's horse

Mongolian wild equine

Przewalski's horse is a stocky wild horse native to the steppes of Central Asia, the only truly wild horse species never domesticated.

Pronounced roughly "sheh-VAL-skee" or "per-zheh-VAL-skee," it was named for the Russian explorer who first described it scientifically.

Once extinct in the wild, captive breeding programs have reintroduced small populations to Mongolia: We spotted a herd of Przewalski's horses in the reserve.
