Wild Asian ass
An onager is a wild ass native to central Asia, larger and swifter than the domestic donkey.
The name was also given to an ancient Roman military catapult, perhaps because of its powerful kick.
The animal sense remains the primary one in modern use: Onagers once roamed from Syria to Mongolia.
