Farrier's metal work

Horseshoes is a lawn game in which players toss U-shaped metal pieces at stakes set in the ground, scoring points for landing close or ringing the stake.

A ringer circles the stake completely.

The expression close only counts in horseshoes (sometimes adding and hand grenades) means that near-misses usually don't matter—except in games where proximity earns points.
