wisent

Poland's wild cattle

A wisent is the European bison, a large wild ox native to European forests.

Slightly smaller and less shaggy than its American cousin, the wisent was hunted nearly to extinction but has been reintroduced to parts of Poland and other countries: The wisent herd in Białowieża Forest is carefully managed.
