Necropolis

Ancient burial grounds

A necropolis is a large cemetery, especially an ancient or elaborate one.

The word comes from Greek meaning "city of the dead," and typically refers to burial grounds of historical significance rather than ordinary modern cemeteries: archaeologists excavating the Roman necropolis, the vast necropolis outside Cairo.

The term emphasizes scale and antiquity.
