phantoms

Ghosts without substance

Phantoms are ghosts or apparitions—things that appear to be present but have no physical reality.

The word extends to anything illusory or elusive: phantom pain persists after a limb is gone, a phantom menace is a threat that may not exist.

Phantom also describes things that exist only on paper: phantom employees on a payroll, phantom votes in an election.
