empty space
Vacuum without matter
Empty space is an area with nothing in it, or at least nothing of consequence.
The term often describes physical voids—an empty space on the shelf, empty space between buildings.
In physics, empty space theoretically contains no matter, though truly empty space may not exist.
Figuratively, it can suggest absence or potential: She stared into the empty space where his portrait had hung.
