volcanic chain
Eruptive mountain series
A volcanic chain is a linear series of volcanoes formed along a tectonic boundary or over a hotspot in Earth's mantle.
The Hawaiian Islands are a classic example—each island formed as the Pacific Plate moved over a stationary hotspot, creating a chain of progressively older volcanoes stretching northwest.
Also called a volcanic arc when formed along a subduction zone.
