Mahicans
Hudson Valley people
The Mahicans are an Indigenous people originally from the Hudson River Valley in present-day New York.
They should not be confused with the Mohegans of Connecticut, though James Fenimore Cooper's novel *The Last of the Mohicans* conflated the two peoples and popularized the spelling Mohican for both.
The Mahicans were pushed westward by colonial expansion and now reside primarily in Wisconsin as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.
