Onondaga

Haudenosaunee central nation

Onondaga refers to a Native American people originally from central New York State, one of the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy.

The Onondaga served as "keepers of the fire"—the central council fire of the confederacy was held in their territory.

The term also names their Iroquoian language and their traditional homeland near present-day Syracuse: the Onondaga Nation.
