Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Sarajevo assassination victim
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne whose assassination in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, triggered World War I.
A Serbian nationalist shot him and his wife Sophie during a state visit to Bosnia.
The killing set off a chain of alliance obligations that escalated a regional crisis into global war within weeks.
His name has become shorthand for the spark that ignites a larger conflagration: That trade dispute could be the Franz Ferdinand moment for the global economy.
