Lugansk

Contested Donbas regional capital

Lugansk is a city in eastern Ukraine, capital of the Luhansk region.

Since 2014, it has been controlled by Russian-backed separatists who declared it capital of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.

The city and region feature prominently in coverage of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Also spelled Luhansk, reflecting Ukrainian rather than Russian transliteration.
